It's a strange but peaceful experience; enveloped by exotic smells and warbled tracks from what must be the Land of Nod Greatest Hits CD, my brain slows down and I'm transported from my daily stresses. Every so often I look across and see the therapist giving my partner her facial - stroking her face as elaborately as one would play a harp while whispering softly to her in the manner one might when cradling a chick fallen from its nest. UGG Argyle Knit Boots While she gets a massage, I decamp to the adjacent driving range, smiting golf balls as far as possible in a lame attempt to restore my manly sense of control. I return to the resort's spa, where we sit in the steam room for 20 minutes, flushing out our guilty pores, then dive into the ultramarine 25-metre pool, then have an invigorating hydrotherapy spa, where the massaging jets are so strong I feel I've been tenderised. It's a wet weekend, so any plans to explore the region are hampered. We brave the rain and wander through Windsor, admiring the grand two-storey Georgian houses. Windsor was apparently the third settlement in the colony and the town has an air of faded grandeur; I only wish the local council had stricter controls on garish bargain-store signage that pollutes the gentle ambience.Hungry, we enter a half-decent looking noodle house but suffer a bland laksa. Strange how when you eat a bad meal, your taste buds say: "Eat again, quickly." Thank god, then, for Vault 146. The restaurant's delicious antipasto is served quickly and the service is friendly. UGG Boots OutletBack at the Sebel, we hunker down for an afternoon and evening of fluffy robes, cable TV, small chocolate treats and room service. Our king-size bed is super-comfy, our room has all we need and the service is flawless; it's a blissful end to the day.On Sunday morning we pay for our sins in the well-equipped gym, then eat a healthy breakfast with poached eggs cooked to order before wandering in the drizzle around the eight-hectare property. The resort's grounds are landscaped and pretty; rows of white roses, a large pond and a gazebo sit in front of reception. The property has a languid, silent feel about it, which is perfect for people who need to unwind.

David West Headed To Indiana

Last season the Indiana Pacers reached the playoffs for the first time since the 2006 campaign, losing to their division rival the Chicago Bulls in the first round.Entering the offseason the Pacers were armed with $21 million in salary cap room and made no secret of their desire to add a major piece via free agency. The Pacers may have found their man to help push the team up the pecking order in the Eastern Conference hierarchy.According to the Indianapolis Star, two-time All-Star forward David West has agreed to a two-year $20 million dollar deal with the Pacers.Even though West is still recovering from a torn left anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered at the tail end of last season, he entered the offseason as one of the league’s most coveted free agents.West, an eight year veteran has career averages of 16.4 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting a stellar 84 percent clip from the free throw line. UGG Classic Mini 5854 The Pacers had been looking to strengthen their frontcourt by adding a top tier power forward this offseason to play alongside center Roy Hibbert who is coming off his best campaign as a professional. With West in the fold the Pacers’ future appears bright in the ever improving Eastern Conference. The Boston Celtics were involved in talks to acquire West from the Hornets in a sign and trade deal over the weekend, but could only offer around $8 million per season.Officially, the Pacers won’t publicly comment until the 31 year old forward passes his physical but West’s agent Lance Young has already begun singing the praises of the Pacers.“David looks at the Pacers as a good young team with a lot of potential,” Young told Mike Wells of the Indianapolis Star. “He feels his experience and leadership will help a team like the Pacers. He was excited Jeff Foster re-signed with them. He feels like Indiana is the best spot for him and his family.” Pacers starting point guard Darren Collison, who played with West in New Orleans, believes the veteran will fit in perfectly in Indiana. “He gives us a guy who is very talented on the offensive end,” Collison said. “He knows how to space the court and he also makes sure the offense runs smoothly. Defensively, he makes sure everybody is where they’re supposed to be.”

Walk on the mild side

A lonely, perfect, unoccupied beach at the end of the Earth is as good a place as any to have a small crisis of conscience about wild places and the conditions required for meaningful engagement with them.Yes, it's all very gorgeous. Pristine is a word dirtied by too much wear in a grubby world, yet in regard to Tasmania's Bay of Fires, it still works. However, intruding on the idle seashore here is the realisation that all that sand, sea and zen has been delivered in blatant contravention of a fundamental tenet of travellers' lore. Here's how the deal is supposed to go: achieving a moment of deep spiritual communion with nature demands certain ritual sacrifices. The reward will be inversely proportional to the pain or effort invested. As the white-knuckle travel writer Mark Jenkins insists, the dividends of adventure require determination, motivation and risk - ''your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness''.And so we who yearn for that collision beat our chests, willingly forfeiting creature comforts for access to unspoiled locations and blessed isolation. UGG Classic Short You lug your pack, endure your blisters, suffer the extremes of weather and the discomforts of trekking for the joy of that flawless, hard-earned moment when the objective is realised. Money may buy many things but never this sweet spot.Several years ago, on the well-worn Overland Track to Cradle Mountain, Tasmania, I made the startling discovery that the price for visiting those glorious peaks and gullies need not be to sleep on the damp ground or to huddle over the Trangia stove for warmth.Instead, one could hand over money and sneak away from the unwashed pilgrims of the path, gain entry to secluded huts hidden in the bush and recover from a long day's walking with afternoon tea, warm scones and a hot shower. Not so much colliding with the earth as falling into a nest of throw cushions artfully strewn on a mountain top. Should one feel smug or deeply shamed? Our poor young guides were loaded up like pack mules with our supplies, while we ''trekkers'' were burdened with little more than our conscience, a change of underwear and a good book to keep us occupied while they cooked dinner. What can I say - they were young and students and ripe for exploitation.Real hikers we passed on the track sniffed out our unnatural cleanliness with appropriate disdain. And back home, there would be a certain loss of kudos in retelling the adventure to sneering, hard-core bushwalkers - ''we had to pump up hot water for the shower by hand''.I wondered, just for a moment, whether the panorama from the peak of Mount Ossa might have been better appreciated with a veneer of sweaty grime. But, you know, executing a bit of an asana on the rug in front of the fire that evening, waiting to be summoned to the table for dinner, I got over it.Having tasted ''eco-luxe'', the damage was done. I yearned for another hit. So, finally, here I am, having a bit of a moment while contemplating the shore from rocks beneath the cantilevered deck of the Bay of Fires eco-lodge - a construction celebrated for its clean, whispered presence on the wild landscape.Behind me, two solid days of walking, including the odd bit of scrambling over boulders and one moment of genuine, exhilarating discomfort - balancing my pack on my head while wading through icy waist-high water.Ahead of me, a selection of Tasmanian gourmet treats, a blazing fire and a luscious local pinot. I've done the miles but have I earned the reward? Guilt lasts about two seconds. Appreciation of the view slightly longer. Ugg Boots Sale Dinner must be ready by now?The Bay of Fires guided walk is run by Anthology, the company that also runs the Cradle Mountain guided trek. The excuse I've employed to get here, to pull on hiking boots and scratch that itch, is the beloved's dreaded milestone birthday - halfway to 100 but emphatically not middle aged. What better present for a bloke with prematurely dodgy hips, a visceral loathing of sand and a deep suspicion of group itineraries than a long walk on an endless beach in the company of strangers? I'd have to go along, of course. I keep it as a birthday surprise until the plane lifts off for Launceston. He's plainly speechless with delight. He recovers somewhat when we arrive at the handsome Quamby Estate, on the first night of a four-night itinerary. The grand 180-year-old homestead is plonked in a postcard bucolic scene of rolling hills.Outside it might be the setting for a lush BBC period piece. Inside, the boutique guest house is a sleek mix of polished heritage and groovy. Our room is huge and decadent, as is the bath tub. It's dusk when we wander to the restaurant in the garden. A pink sky at night augurs well for conditions when we hit the trail. In the morning comes the reckoning. Who will be our fellow walkers? What if we don't like them? Having survived a few similar random gatherings over the years, I'm not too concerned. Usually the people who sign up to such itineraries share, if nothing else, some rich common ground in their regard for wilderness. They are often well-travelled or adventurous, though age, physical decay, time constraints, yearning for indulgence or encroaching softness have inclined them to fork out this time for the easy route. In a worst-case scenario, there's at least no shortage of personal space. We gather after breakfast - two Australian journalists; one effervescent Kiwi-born magistrate from Bedfordshire; one cricket-mad Briton into commercial property; one spry Swiss gentlewoman who long ago gave up the Alps for Alice Springs and love; her attentive, elegant art-dealer daughter; one lanky American librarian; one softly spoken, middle-aged English adventuress-cum-mild-mannered-medical-administrator. We'd make an excellent cast for a Christie-esque murder mystery. As we exchange pleased-to-meet-yous our two guides, earth children and university students with soft manners and formidable energy, check our packs to ensure we have brought all the proper kit and nothing that might unnecessarily weigh us down.Being familiar with this shakedown, I know to hide the odd extraneous luxury. I also know I will regret the burden later but will ultimately be comforted that the hair stands up well in the photographs. We pack ourselves a picnic and load our kit on the mini-bus for a road trip through pretty scenery and sleepy towns to Mount William National Park in the island's far north-east corner. Finally we set out on foot, crossing the headlands to the sand - bearing south, finding stride and settling the mind as we plod the length of the first of many beaches. We have nine kilometres to cover this first afternoon.Just before evening, our guides, Rosie and Dom, veer inland to the hidden Forester Beach camp, a colony of white semi-permanent tents in low heathland with a composting toilet. There's nothing particularly ''luxe'' about the minimalist facilities, other than the blessed knowledge that ''pitching camp'' involves little more than dropping your pack and laying out a sleeping bag.Rose and Dom do a fine job of cooking the Tasmanian salmon steaks they have hauled in for dinner and we share wine, company and a magic night sky.A few years ago the Australian writer Frank Moorhouse delivered a speech to travel scribes bemoaning the emergence of faux-trekking experiences rather like this one. Real backpacking was ''inescapably a re-enactment of our ancestral or atavistic past'', he insisted. It was about ''exposure to the weather, cave dwelling, fire making, finding shelter, being haunted by superstitions, by encountering ghosts and enduring the risk and hazard of the journey''.In celebration of that, Moorhouse was in the habit of taking off into the wilderness twice a year with maps, compass, backpack, tent, food and a supply of whisky decanted into light plastic flasks. His treks were ''limited to eight days, because I can carry only that amount of whisky''.Of course, he is right. There is certainly a purity in raw, self-sustained engagement with wilderness. But horses for courses. Sometimes soft-core trekking allows a path back to nature when, for whatever reason, we are not able or inclined to endure the weather, the hardships or the ghosts of our primeval selves. We all undertake our travels within the constraint of our respective realities - Moorhouse's was the whisky, ours is a combination of arthritis, too much to do and the yearning to pause to recognise a milestone. The itinerary for the second day is inescapable: a solid seven hours of walking, covering about 14 kilometres. The trail meanders across the ridges where the scrub meets the sand, over lichen-painted boulders demarcating coves and along great sweeps of shoreline. In places, the walking is challenging and fitness and flexibility will determine the pace but it's never arduous.Being at the mercy of weather and tides, conditions are unpredictable. UGG Ultra Short
There's a creek crossing that might be anywhere from ankle-deep to chest height. Our diminutive Swiss walking companion, on the occasion of her 70th birthday, cheerfully plunges into water up to her armpits. For me, the chief allure of the long walk is the opportunity for meditation, the footfall into reverie. But there are endless lovely distractions. Seabirds forage over the shallows and the coastal heath and the sclerophyll forest beyond is inhabited by busy wrens and the odd paddymelon, kangaroo and echidna. We carefully skirt the great middens left behind by the Aboriginal people who once gathered here to feast on the bounty of the sea and whose circle of cooking fires endure now only on the map.The Bay of Fires was named by the British commander of HMS Adventure, Captain Tobias Furneaux, when he sailed past in 1773 en route to New Zealand, where he would rejoin Captain James Cook. His name endures in the Furneaux Group of islands, the remnants of the land bridge that once extended across Bass Strait to the Victorian coast. We can contemplate the passage of deep time by studying the stepping stones strewn on the horizon. The last leg up to the eco-lodge, teetering on the edge of a high precipice, is the trickiest section of the whole walk. You arrive on deck exerted and exhilarated to find your lodge hosts waiting with a welcoming drink. For a moment, you might feel faux-intrepid. Then the cooking smells mingle with the sunset. We have two nights here. Plenty of down-time. The next day is a relatively short walk and a long paddle in a kayak across nearby Anson's Bay.The lodge is rightly recognised for its sublimely simple aesthetic. Bedrooms are sparse - a wide bed, windows to the bush, hooks to hang your clothes, boots at the door, swallows nesting in the rafters. Bathrooms are simple steel-lined cubicles and guests pump up their limited supply of solar-heated water. There are no mirrors - reminding me of visiting my aunt the nun in her convent. Here, she counselled, we reflect on deeper things.A small library soaks up the sun and the views. Wallabies graze outside the glass-walled communal lounge-dining area, full of light in the day and mellow music in the evening. Cheese and wine are served beside the fire. There's always cake on the sideboard and tea and coffee are at the ready. To the hiker, this is the height of barefoot luxury - peace and the pleasure of unspoiled nature, with perks. But the habitual indulgent might regard it as hard going - you will break a nail, it is good manners to help with the cleaning up, you can't bring a hair-dryer and the dress code is polar fleece. UGG Classic Mini 5854The only entertainment - beyond sharing and reading stories - is provided by the baby swallows we cheer as they make their maiden flights.Cruising the net on return home, I notice that one unhappy camper has blogged a review complaining that the experience reminded her of school camp but with an exorbitant price tag.At the other extreme, Lonely Planet listed the Bay of Fires walk last year as the world's hottest destination. For us, it will be remembered as the location for the world's coldest swim - plunging into the bluest, most perfect waves to mark a 50th birthday, emerging with the bluest, imperfect limbs. For being barked at by a passing seal, unhappy about the human intrusion. For watching a flotilla of pelicans come into land around our kayak. For warming up by the fire in the company of not-so-strangers - all karmic gifts and good company. Eating heartily, relaxing indulgently, treading carefully. And we resolve to next time earn it the hard way. Maybe.

East Tsim Sha Tsui

The greatest claim to fame of East Tsim Sha Tsui is being the setting for the 2002 Hong Kong crime thriller Infernal Affairs, a film remade in 2006 by Martin Scorsese as The Departed. It wasn't far from the truth: Tsim Sha Tsui has long been known as the badlands of the city's Triad gangs. It's also the location of some of the city's most lavish and expensive hotels, including the Peninsula, which opened in 1928, and the harbour-side InterContinental Kowloon.Trend spotters are now tagging East Tsim Sha Tsui as one of Hong Kong's next hip neighbourhoods. At a glance there is little to indicate trends of any kind. Comprised largely of empty 1980s office buildings, struggling shopping malls, kitsch Chinese restaurants and jade jewellers, the fading neighbourhood doesn't appear to have moved a day past the late '80s.Then in April this year came the Hotel Icon, a 262-room tower on Science Museum Road. UGG Boots Australia Designed by local architects Rocco Yim and William Lim, with the assistance of Sir Terence Conran in the restaurant spaces and a suite by fashion guru Vivienne Tan, this former government dormitory has been reinvented as the city's latest darling digs. Most rooms in Hotel Icon, which is only metres from the harbour and the tallest building in its neighbourhood, have sweeping views of Hong Kong Island and Tsim Sha Tsui from floor-to-ceiling windows, with plenty of special touches. Owned and partly run by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the hotel doubles as a hospitality school, with a new curriculum that aims to train 500 students a year for Asian hotels."There are 200 hotels opening a year in China alone," says the hotel's general manager, Richard Hatter. "But there is almost no education system that trains staff to manage them."The hotel's training role doesn't mean the service is lacking, however. There are almost three paid and experienced staff to every two guests and the service is unfailingly chirpy and sincere. While in East Tsim Sha Tsui, make the most of the local diners and try some authentic Chinese fare.Tai Hing Roast Restaurant is across the street from Hotel Icon and serves roast pig with crunchy crackling - so wickedly delicious it could almost be a crime.

Vitamin E helps cut fatty liver disease in kids

A new study has suggested that a specific form of vitamin E improved the most severe form of fatty liver disease in some children.Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease among children. NAFLD ranges in severity from steatosis (fat in the liver without injury) to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis or NASH (fat, inflammation, and liver damage). The only way to distinguish NASH from other forms of fatty liver disease is with a liver biopsy.Using liver biopsies, researchers found that after 96 weeks of treatment, 58 percent of the children on vitamin E no longer had NASH, compared to 41 percent of the children on metformin (a diabetes drug), and 28 percent on placebo. Argyle Knit UGG Boots Vitamin E was better than placebo because it significantly reduced enlargement and death of liver cells."These results suggest that vitamin E improves or resolves NASH in at least half of children, which we previously showed to be true in adults," said Stephen P. James, director of the digestive diseases and nutrition division at NIH``s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. While the results are encouraging, patients using vitamin E for NASH should be under a doctor’s care. The study was recently published in the journal of the American Medical Association.

Green tea and red laser can cure Alzheimer`s

Green tea and red laser light can act as a powerful duo in obliterating Alzheimer’s plaques, a new study has revealed. The research team at University of Ulm in Germany including Andrei Sommer and colleagues revealed that the light makes it feasible for the green-tea extract to work on the plaques. The researchers had earlier used red light with a wavelength of 670 nanometres to transfer cancer drugs into cells.During the process they found that the laser light pushes water out of the cells and when the laser is switched off, the cells ‘suck in’ water and any other molecules, including drugs, from their surroundings.Sommer’s team have established that the same technique can be used to annihilate the beta-amyloid plaques in Alzheimer’s.According to the researchers, these plaques consist of abnormally folded peptides, and are thought to interrupt communication between nerve cells, which may cause symptoms like loss of memory. The team bathed brain cells containing beta-amyloid in epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) - a green-tea extract known to have beta-amyloid inhibiting properties - at the same time as stimulating the cells with red light, the New Scientist reported. UGG Classic Tall 5815 The results showed that the Beta-amyloid in cells got cut down by around 60 per cent and subjecting the cells to laser light alone reduced beta-amyloid by around 20 per cent.Sommer asserted that getting drugs into the brain could be a challenging task but animal experiments indicate that the green-tea extract can penetrate the so-called blood-brain barrier when given orally together with red light.“This important research could form the basis of a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s, with or without complementary drug treatment,” said Mario Trelles, medical director of the Vilafortuny Medical Institute in Cambrils, Spain.“The technique described could help to regulate and even stop the appearance of this disease,” he added.

15 mins exercise extends life by 3 years

As little as 15 minutes of exercise everyday can extend your life by as much as three years, a new research has found.
Taiwanese researchers examined more than 400,000 study participants in a 12-year period, where patients self-reported their weekly exercise regimen and were then placed in one of five groups: inactive, low, medium, high or very high exercise activity. UGG Classic Cardy 5819 The study found that people in the low-exercise group, who spent 15 minutes on fitness per day, reduced their risk of dying from cancer by 10 per cent and had a three-year longer life expectancy than the inactive group."The 30-minute a day for five or more days a week has been the golden rule for the last 15 years, but now we found even half that amount could be very beneficial," ABC News quoted Dr Chi-Pang Wen, lead author of the study, as saying. With every additional 15 minutes of exercise per day, participants reduced their risk of dying from cancer by another 1 per cent, the research found.Researchers found the benefits went on growing for up to 100 minutes of exercise a day.Men and women of all ages shared the benefits, including those at risk of heart disease. The research report said: "If inactive individuals engage in low-volume daily exercise, one in six all-cause deaths could be postponed." The study has been published in the journal Lancet.

Last week, Miley Cyrus' rep told Us Weekly that the 19-year-old's "You know you're a stoner when your friends make you a Bob Marley cake" remark was "a joke," but the actors on Saturday Night Live are having the last laugh. will Cain quit?

Former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Cain enjoyed a brief reign at the top of the polls, in part because rank-and-file Republican voters viewed him as a refreshing outsider. However, his campaign stumbled when he was accused of sexually harassing several women during his stint as head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s.Earlier this week, another woman, Ginger White, went public with an accusation that Cain had conducted a 13-year consensual extramarital affair with her. She produced phone records that indicated they had been in contact dozens of times. Cain has since acknowledged giving White money to help her through difficult financial times. Cain, however, has denied that he and White had a Cheap Ugg Boots sexual relationship. Steve Grubbs, who is overseeing Cain’s Iowa operation, said the newest numbers from the Des Moines Register’s new Iowa poll are “not good” and are consistent with the campaign’s internal analysis of the state of play there. But he said he believes Cain still has a solid 10 percent support in the state and can finish in the top three in the Iowa caucuses. He acknowledged that Cain is now trailing well behind former House speaker Newt Gingrich and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, after being at or near the top of the field. But he said the campaign’s internal numbers show other candidates were either tied with Cain or running behind. Grubbs said Friday morning he had no inside knowledge of Cain’s future plans and is continuing to focus on the organization in Iowa. “If I could have a couple of drama-free weeks, I think we could get back on track,” Grubbs said.

This man didn't regret it at all what he did

What comes up is Senator Heffernan's attack. I regard that as sad and offensive. I hope that one day if his name is Rosetta Stone Googled what will come up is his example of human kindness, support, intelligence and goodness to everyone." Van Vloten himself is less forgiving: he believes Kirby was targeted because he was gay and for political reasons, as a result of court decisions that went against the Howard government. "The Heffernan affair would have been the result of his coming out, plus one or two decisions which were very, very unpopular with the government of the day, particularly the Wik decision ... there must have been a sore spot there." He adds: "I always knew that in the long run these documents would prove to be false because if there was any relevance or truth in that issue you'd be hanged for stupidity." While Kirby won't attack Heffernan directly, his partner makes clear his contempt: "This man didn't regret it at all what he did, only regretted that it went that way." It's an issue Kirby says brings to the fore a key difference between them: he is a lifelong Christian of Anglican faith, while van Vloten is a non-believer. "He's opposed to [religion] and has always been opposed to it. He's always been puzzled, as he puts it, that one of the most intelligent people he's met could still take seriously all that stuff of the old men in turbans. And they were all old men as he Rosetta Stone Software keeps pointing out to me. Not enough women in religion." And when it comes to forgiving Heffernan, Kirby says of his partner: "He comes from an agnostic position whereas I come from a Christian position." Indeed, it is difficult to get Kirby to turn his verbal guns on anybody. Of Tony Abbott, who came under fire earlier this year for saying he felt "threatened" by gay people, Kirby offers a defence of sorts of the Liberal leader. "I think he was just being honest about the journey that he's gone on. I hope that he'll continue on a journey to understand scientific reality ... And he's backed off a bit since then. I've been on a journey, he's on a journey, Mr Rudd's on a journey, we're all on a journey." For Kirby, who retired from the High Court last year, that journey shows no signs of slowing down. He insists this is the beginning of his second act. Indeed, he maintains a startlingly busy global schedule of speaking engagements and other commitments. "My best years lie ahead," he says with a laugh. He describes his working life as a joy, his private life as "a miracle". Which prompts the question: if it were legal, would he and van Vloten marry? The answer is a small surprise. While he supports gay marriage, he wonders if it would be wise to tamper with a partnership that has Italian Learning Software withstood the test of so many years. "We possibly would not," he says. "We have gone through long years and we have, I think, a wonderful relationship. You'd have to be worried about [losing] the magic." Compass: Michael Kirby screens on Sunday, June , at 10.pm on ABC1.

The Swedish furniture empire makes its own web TV series

While there are loads of bad ads (Othmer reckons 90-99 per cent are crap), a lot of us will distinguish Rosetta Stone V3 between the good ones and the dross. A popular fascination with the mechanics of advertising is reflected, also, in the success of two television shows: The Gruen Transfer, a comic dissection of the art of selling, and Mad Men, the superb American drama set on ?1960s Madison Avenue. While the rise of social media and YouTube have highlighted an intriguing contradictionour ability to both like and hate advertisingnew technologies are also transforming the ad industry. For half a century, advertisers were heavily reliant on the 30-second TV spot. Today, as Othmer writes in his memoir Adland, most of the anxiety in this $670 billion-a-year global industry revolves around the emergence of digital advertising and audience erosion in traditional media (TV, print and radio). With consumers able to edit out TV ads and talk back to advertisers online, the industry's buzzwords are now "engaging" and "entertaining". "It's very, very important for an ad to be entertaining," explains Cameron Blackley, creative director at Sydney's Droga5 agency. "You have to catch people's attention." His agency's founder, New York-based David Droga, has an even loftier vision for the industry: using brands to create moments that can shape our culture. Droga's firm created the mock amateur video of graffiti artists tagging Air Force One that went viral in 06. It was really an ad for Ecko clothing. Still, when it comes to ads-as-entertainment, few are as ambitious as IKEA. The Swedish furniture empire makes its own web TV series, a fictional comedy called Easy to Assemble. Starring actor Illeana Douglas as a loveable IKEA employee, the show marries a daggy '50s sitcom aesthetic with the deadpan style of The Office, exploring questions of life, love and how to become employee of the month. Actors Jeff Goldblum and Tom Arnold have appeared in it and the second series was viewed more than 13 million times. Othmer, who spent more than two decades as a New York-based creative director, sees advertising as a paradox. It attracts some of the most creative minds in the world, then asks them to convince people to buy something they usually "do not want, need, or care about".? Advertising is a rarefied industry (Othmer and his crew Rosetta Stone Spanish Latin had an on-set masseuse and ate lobster tails while shooting an ad in a South African shanty town), but the creative director's mission is to connect with the rest of usor at least the target market. So copious research helps shape campaigns. Leo Burnett has sent ethnographers into homes to observe "consumers in their natural environment". Brain scans can track people's responses to a brand, and marketers, writes Othmer, have used hypnosis to get a more honest response in focus groups. On the internet, our every click is recorded, with marketing messages tailored accordingly. When Droga5 made last year's VB Regulars ad, research was vital. The brief was to update ? the beer's image and the ad depicted a collection of ?unsung "heroes"from manscapers to cashed-up bogansmarching in a parade. A skeleton script was tested on about 50 hours of focus groups, says Blackley. Marchers that weren't popularthe weekend warriors (war gamers) and emoswere taken out. Filmed in Ballarat, with a cast of about 2300 and a production budget of $2.8 million, the ad won a Gold Lion at Cannes this year in the global industry's top awards. Cadbury's "it's no picnic" campaign, in which people made their own TV ads using a specially designed website, also won a Gold Lion for George Patterson YR. Executive creative director Ben Coulson says that, with online technologies, the aim is to build a two-way relationship. "People just don't want to be treated like passive consumers of a message they're not interested in." His firm has just finished making "Australia's hottest legal street car" in a campaign for Just Car insurance. Twenty-five thousand streetcar aficionados signed up for the project online: voting on what shape Rosetta Stone Spain Spanish the car should take (from base model, to wheels, to paint colour) and watching its construction in Croydon via a -part web series.

Aboriginal elder died 'alone, thirsty'

A "tragic sequence of miscommunication" led to the death of a near-blind elderly Rosetta Stone Aboriginal patient, left alone with only a little water at a remote Northern Territory airstrip, a coronial inquest has been told. The 78-year-old Aboriginal elder was flown home to Kalkaringi about 600km south of Darwin on August 21 last year after being treated for pneumonia at Katherine Hospital. He was unable to walk unaided, yet had no escort on the chartered flight and there was no-one to meet him when he arrived. Advertisement: Story continues below His body was found in bushland near the airstrip one week after police abandoned their search. At an inquest at Kalkaringi Court on Tuesday, counsel assisting the coroner Ben O'Loughlin said the evidence showed he died from a combination of heat exposure, lack of water and pneumonia. He said the elder - who cannot be named for cultural reasons - was probably disorientated and carrying only a little water when he was left at the airport, which is "some kilometres" from the community and has limited shelter and no water. "The circumstances concerning this death show a tragic sequence of miscommunication, resulting in a frail, elderly man to be left at an isolated airstrip in 35 degree heat," he told the court in his opening statement. Mr O'Loughlin said a fax had been sent from Katherine Hospital advising of the Rosetta Stone Italian patient's arrival but it was not received by the local clinic. He said the elder's age, frailty, mental faculties and the fact he spoke English as a second language warranted the provision of an escort. "It would presumably have prevented (the man) from walking off in the wrong direction and this would have improved his chances of survival," Mr O'Loughlin said. The court was told a number of fatal assumptions had been made, such as the hospital assuming someone would collect the man from the airport while the clinic assumed that the elders remained in hospital. The pilot also assumed that because a flight had been booked someone was going to come and collect the elder. "Each of these assumptions may have seemed reasonable at the time but hindsight has shown that they were wrong and the results were fatal," Mr O'Loughlin said. Outside the court, lawyer Julian Johnson from The Northern Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) representing the family, said the inquest would canvass issues such as the use of interpreters at hospitals, escorts and the adequacy of the patient travel system. "The indigenous elder's family asked the Kalkarindji clinic for an escort to be sent with him as he spoke very little English, was very deaf and had other health problems," he said. At the time of the man's death, his niece accused the health department of "hard-core, systemic racism" and the tragedy prompted the Australian Medical Association (AMA) to call for a royal commission into the state of Aboriginal healthcare in the territory. Checks Rosetta Stone Korean have revealed at least one other case of a bungled patient transfer investigated by the NT coroner in the past three years. The inquest is continuing.

Havana Rakatan Review of Cuban dance at Sydney Opera House

In the beat of the night ... Cuban dancing is famous for its exuberance, plasticity Rosetta Stone Software and quality, and this show is calculated to please. Photo: Prudence Upton Reviewer rating: Rating: 40 out of 5 stars Reader rating: Rating: 50 out of 5 stars (8 votes) Genre Dance Performer Havana Rakatan HAVANA RAKATAN Opera House, June 8 until June 19 DANCING broke out among the audience in the foyer before the show even began - on opening night, a band was playing there already. And the celebratory mood continued inside the Opera Theatre for a show that puts a smile on your face from start to finish. Advertisement: Story continues below While it won't set the dance world alight as a must-see for that art form, Havana Rakatan is terrific entertainment in music and dance, crisply performed and smoothly directed. The first half tells a story in the language of movement that doesn't need translation, and the second pulsates with Cuban and Latin rhythms - mambo, cha-cha, salsa - that have you practically dancing in your seat. Cuban dancing is legendary for its exuberance, plasticity and quality - ask anyone lucky enough to see the Cuban ballet and contemporary dancers in Brisbane last year - and these performers have plenty to offer. The choreographer and artistic director of the company, Nilda Guerra Sanchez, has built the complexity and sophistication of the dance Rosetta Stone Language to an exhilarating climax. There are 13 dancers who mostly perform as a neatly synchronised ensemble of or with breakouts for solos, duets and a bounding male trio that also gives its participants individual opportunities that they seize with thrilling zest. The dynamic band consists of eight men - some of whom also sing, and the guitarists do their own bit of dancing - plus a female singer, Geydi Chapman, who gives the music an aural and visual charge. Dance styles cover a wide range. The evening begins with an unexpectedly balletic sequence but soon moves into a free-flowing mingling of traditional and contemporary styles that is best summed up as folkloric. A flamenco-inspired character represents the Spanish colonisation of Cuba, along with a colonial master, whip in hand, who punishes slaves of African extraction, adding another regional dance dimension. The power of the people wins out, and a wedding crowns the happy celebrations. After the interval, a medley of Cuban and contemporary dance brings on a silver curtain, a mirror ball and a kaleidoscope Rosetta Stone Chinese (Mandarin) of colourful costumes - as well as an admirable display of high-speed, high-powered dance.

The latest RNLI statistics

I was in Moelfre towards the end of last year, clearing my parents house before its Rosetta Stone Language sale, more of that later. I went for a final walk around the sea cliffs from their house to the harbor and town and came across this statue to Dic Evans, coxswain of the Moelfre Lifeboat. Non British readers may not know that in the UK the lifeboat service (which performs many of the same services as the Coastguard in the US) is a voluntary organisation. The latest RNLI statistics show in 2006 lifeboats launched a total of 8,377 times (the highest annual number to date) and rescued 8,015 people . The boats are paid for by public collection, and crewed by local people with deep knowledge of the sea. Often fisherman, working under conditions of extreme danger solely out of concern for others. It is rare for their heroism to be recognised in this way. They are ordinary people, living in the local community who understand that the world is not about selfishness, but about service. To give you a sense of the danger involved, this is the description of the event in 1959 which earnt Dic his first gold medal:Dic earned his first gold medal on 27th October 1959 on the reserve lifeboat Edmund and Mary Robinson. The lifeboat was on temporary duty at the station, and launched with a crew of five including one man, a helper, who had never been out on service in a lifeboat before. She put out to the MV Hindlea of Cardiff, which was in distress in a hurricane force wind gusting to 104 miles per hour Dic found the Hindlea with one anchor down, but not holding, in 48ft of water. The vessel was swinging from side to side and her engine, which was racing violently, did little to reduce the weight on the anchor chain. The chain was continually whipping clear of the water. The Hindlea was being blown towards the rocks in shallow water and the master gave orders to abandon her. Dic steered the Language Learning Software lifeboat towards the vessel from the seaward side, but as he did so a tremendous breaking sea rolled the lifeboat over on to her side, putting her mast beneath the water. She was dangerously close to the Hindlea s thrashing propeller, which was so far out of the water that it was above the heads of the crew. The coxswain succeeded in taking the lifeboat alongside the wreck ten times. On eight of these occasions one man jumped into the lifeboat at a time and all were got safely aboard. His second gold medal for the rescue of the crew of the Nafsiporous involved the lifeboat crew being at seas continuously for 35 hours. Now, that same village of Moelfre (and many other rural communities around the world) faces a different problem. Its houses are being bought as holiday cottages and local people, the same people who crew the lifeboats and provide the identity of a welsh speaking community, are unable to afford the inflated prices. One can understand, if not support the tactics of Meibion Glyndwr. Social injustice uncorrected provides fertile grounds for terrorism, and more critically the passive support of terrorism by the general population. The destruction of identity is not just a part of the so called march of progress, it also damages much of the diversity of our culture and the social connections that provide people like Dic Evans.I had planned to blog on my visit to Moelfre yesterday, but found it too difficult. St David s Day, once a celebration is now, at least for me, a day Portuguese Learning Software of reflection and sadness.
